Class will be responsive to the needs of the students, and will explore various techniques and styles. Students can work on their own, but each week will feature a step-by-step demo. Choosing a color palette to fit the subject, under-painting, use of sedimentary colors versus dye color, spatter and different types of brushes, and masking will be covered.

You’ll learn how to choose colors and how to apply them in layers using several techniques, including palette knife. Each student works on their own artwork and at their own pace. You have a choice to choose one or more mediums; however, it is advised to learn one or two mediums only in a session (preferably one). This will give you enough time to focus and to explore different types of paintings using that medium. We will work from still life setup or from a reference photo. You can choose a landscape, seascape, floral, still life, figurative and/or portraits. Beginner as well as experienced painters are welcome.
Note: Supplies are not included.

Developing Your Drawing Style

Drawing is a wonderful way to express yourself, and expanding your drawing skills is one of the best ways to develop your unique artistic style. We will draw still lifes, landscapes and other subjects that interest each artist, and we will use reference photos to sharpen your observational skills while encouraging your personal artistic interpretation.
Join us for a fun drawing journey designed to build confidence in your artistic decisions, expand your technical skills, and help you uncover your own creative voice. All skill levels are welcome!

Layer by Layer: Collaging on the Gelli Plate

Gelli printing is a simple and intuitive form of mono-printing that allows for playful experimentation with color, texture and layering - no prior experience required.
We will transform your collection of painted papers into unique collage prints created directly on the gelli plate. In this class, students will use an intuitive approach to layering, arranging, and combining previously created gel prints into rich visual assemblages. Through multiple layers, transfers, and pulls, you’ll discover how color, texture, and composition interact to create unexpected and exciting results. This process encourages experimentation and play while exploring the creative possibilities of assemblage and collage within the gel printing process.

Bring to class any printed papers you have already created on the gelli plate.
Gelli Plate: (Gelli Arts) 8x10, can be ordered on Amazon. Don’t use Temu Brand or Speedball, they are not good for acrylic paints.
Paints: Tube paints such as Liquitex Basics (don’t buy heavy body) and Michael’s Paints are fine. Inexpensive craft paints work but have less pigment. If you are purchasing craft paint, Deco Art is good. Paints have different opacity ratings so try and have a mix of opaque, semi-opaque and translucent.
Brayer: 4” to start.
Paper: Costco Kirkland copy paper is a good paper to start with, or Staples True Red copy paper. Cheap copy paper from the dollar store won’t work. Rice paper (there are many different kinds to choose from on Amazon) and deli paper are also wonderful, also available on Amazon. White tissue paper is also fun to try.
Water Color Paper: Canson or Srathmore, or any store brand like Michael’s, are inexpensive papers good for using to pull our collaged prints. Make sure it covers the size of your gelli plate.
Stencils: Anything that is appealing to you. Make sure they aren’t paper stencils because they won’t hold up.

Independent Visual Journeys to Abstraction - All Levels

Students will be guided through a series of demonstrations and open-ended explorations that encourage individual decision-making and personal direction. Techniques and topics may include:
• Expanding your existing knowledge of experimental materials and processes
• Approaches to starting an abstract work
• Exploring mandala-inspired structure, repetition, and pattern
• Developing work through intuition, reflection, and personal response
While the instructor will provide demonstrations, prompts, and guidance, students are encouraged to follow their own artistic instincts and work at their own pace. This class emphasizes creative exploration, experimentation, and personal growth within a supportive studio environment.

Images, Color & Inspiration: Creating Your Personal Book of Days

During this creative journey, SoulCollage® facilitator Eileen West guides you in creating a handcrafted accordion-style art journal. Using the transformative SoulCollage® process, you will explore themes that inspire, uplift, and reflect your personal story.
Through collage, image gathering, writing, and intuitive art-making, you’ll create pages that express your interests and inner voice. The focus is not on artistic skill, but on creative exploration, self-expression, and discovering insight through images and intuition.
Recommended prerequisite: Prior experience with SoulCollage® (workshop, class, or personal practice).
Materials Fee: A creative kit is available from the instructor at the first class for $25 (cash or Venmo). The materials listed below are required to complete the project.

Sunflowers Watercolor Workshop

The focus will be on the structure of the flower which is very geometric, helping you see and draw the sunflower more accurately by finding the underlying shapes that guide its form. We’ll also explore making value changes with the color yellow—often one of the trickiest colors in watercolor. The challenge is to make value changes in yellow, while maintaining luminosity and depth. The other challenge is to making a compelling composition. Perfect for artists who want to sharpen their drawing skills while deepening their understanding of color.
