Boonton Studio presents final holiday show
(by Elizabeth Martin - December 12, 2007)

Local resident professional artists, amateurs and students are
featured side by side at the Morris County Art Association’s final
exhibit at their Boonton Studio. This holiday show combines some
of the finest work of these local artists.

The exhibit displays 50 pieces, by 17 separate artists, with each
artist allowed to submit a maximum of three pieces. The pieces are
mostly winter in theme, with a strong overall continuity to the
works displayed. The paintings vary greatly in medium from
traditional oil paintings, pastels and watercolors to oil washes and
graphite pencil drawings. There are also sculptures in an
assortment of different media such as bronze, resin and even
paper.

The exhibit represents the joint efforts of local artists coming
together to form a community where they can display, critique and
perhaps even sell some of their work. In fact, most of the work in
this exhibit is available for purchase. This gallery represents the
work of commissioned artists, portrait painters, professionals,
amateurs with 20 to 30 years of experience, and perhaps even a
neighbor, all of whom are members of the Morris Country Art
Association.

The Morris County Art Association (MCAA) was founded in 1935 by
a group of local artists and professional painters working on
dioramas, full-sized or to-scale partial three-dimensional replicas,
for Washington’s Headquarters at Morristown National Historical
Park. The artists continued to meet regularly, first in members’
homes, then, in 1956, they purchased "The Studio" at 10
Catherine Lane in Morristown. Ever since, the MCAA has been
offering art classes, exhibiting members’ work, and hosting
weekend workshops for members and the community.

Currently they offer classes open to the public for ages 6 through
106, in a wide variety of media, and for all levels of experience.
They even offer classes one might not be able to find anywhere
else in the area, such as Chinese Brush Painting or Outdoor Stone
Carving.

In 1998 the MCAA expanded its program to Boonton with the
addition of the Boonton Studio at 715 Main St. This studio offers
more classes, continuous art exhibits and Open Studio Fridays
where members can come and work in a creatively stimulating
environment. The Boonton Studio was originally opened to give
members in this area a place to work, exhibit, take and teach
classes without having to travel to Morristown.

This holiday show represents the very final exhibit at the Boonton
Studio before closing its doors due to rising rent costs, funding
cuts, and a decline in community support. The MCAA has chosen to
consolidate its resources down to the Morristown location and the
artists are hopeful that this will allow them to continue their work
and strengthen their organization.

Victoria Starger (left), 10-year member and local professional artist,
is one such artist featured in the show. Educated at the du Cret
School of the Arts in Plainfield, Starger has remained locally while
exhibiting globally. Her work has been featured in New York, Paris,
and all over New Jersey. The pieces she has entered into the
exhibit are black and white graphite drawings of the Denville area.
Starger is also an instructor at the MCAA, teaching all levels of
drawing, colored pencil, and watercolor techniques. She is a proud
resident of Mountain Lakes.

Another member exhibiting in this show is Micheal Shacham, an
international sculptor and instructor at MCAA. Shacham has had a
long and distinguished career as sculptor. He was taught to sculpt
at a very young age by his grandfather, Samuel Persoff. Later he
was an apprentice to Israeli sculptors, Y. Shemi and I. Danziger
while he lived in Israel in his youth. Shacham studied at the Art
Students League of New York for nearly five years and also took
classes in art history at the New School. Among Shacham’s many
accomplishments as a sculptor is the opening of a bronze foundry
in Israel and commissions both in Israel and the New Jersey area.
Besides sculpting, Shacham has also done some Judaic work,
including Menorahs and jewelry. His work has been exhibited in
Israel and throughout the United States and Europe. Presently,
Shacham teaches sculpture at the MCAA as well as the American
Woodcarving School. One piece he has chosen to exhibit in the
MCAA’s holiday show is a bronze entitled, "Judgement Day." Of his
own work Shacham says that his main artistic direction is, "toward
figurative and more realistic work rather than the cascade of
changing styles that was typical of the art of the 20th century."

Patty Kaliher of Rockaway is another member of MCAA contributing
to this exhibit. Kaliher began taking art classes when she reached
fifty and wanted to start, "using my right brain." She joined the
MCAA in 2004 because she felt a need to take art classes and
meet people like herself. She is an oil painter and a potter. For this
exhibit, she has chosen to contribute three oil paint views, two of
the Rockaway River, spring and winter (right), and one autumn
painting of the Black River. She has also shown her work in
Chicago and Wisconsin.

Other local residents who are members of MCAA and have
contributed work to this holiday exhibit include: Carol Campbell,
Kathryn Bennett, and Laurie Harden of Boonton; Janice Myers and
Mary Ann Wentworth of Boonton Township, Carol Hogoboom and
Letitia Annis of Green Pond, Elaine Provost of Denville, Donna
Saiewitz of Parsippany and several other artists in the Morris and
Passaic County area.

The work of all these local artists is on display at the Boonton
Studio located at 715 Main St. The holiday exhibit runs now
through Dec. 27. The gallery is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday,
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment. For more information
about classes, membership, and current exhibits please call, 973-
541-0818, or 973-263-3340, or visit their web site at, www.

The Morris County Art Association is a non-profit organization that
strives to provide art instruction, lectures and events for adults
and youth in the community. Their funding has been made possible
in part by funds from the Arts Council of the Morris Area through
the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of the State,
a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
