The Portrait and Figure

Work from a clothed model with two-week long poses, in any medium.  Concentrate on
either a portrait head, or on the entire figure.  Get a handle on correct proportion, the
planes of the head, the anatomy of the body as well as color shape, light on form and
gesture.  Beginner to advanced. Model fee is extra.  Your instructor works with each
student individually.

The Sketchbook

Experimental Watermedia/Abstract Painting

Develop an individual approach and expand your painting and design skills using fluid
acrylics, watercolor and collage materials.  Learn layering techniques using multiple
transparent glazes, gold leafing with collage, and texture with various tools.  Explore
creative ways of combining watermedia and acrylics.  Emphasis on underlying abstract
design structure enables you to employ these techniques to enhance both your

Traditional Oil Painting for Adults and Serious Teens

Introduction to Stone Carving

This course is intended as an introduction to time-honored hand-carving techniques for
sculpting stone.  In addition we will provide instruction in direct modeling techniques in
clay.  We will be working outside weather permitting.  It is intended as an ongoing class.  
We will work until it is too cold to work outside.  We will skip bad weather days and add the

Cartooning Comic Strips - Ages 12 - 18

The course will explore the essential mechanics of cartooning comic strips.  Studies will
include character design, character development, narrative art, and composition.  
Students will develop the skills needed to write and illustrate their own comic strips.  Bring
a 2B pencil, black micron pen, white Magic Rub or Mars eraser, ruler (at least 18" in
length) T square, Ames lettering guide, drafting tape, 14 x 17 Bristol vellum finish drawing
pad, and sketchbook 9 x 12  or larger (your preference.)  Extension classes may be
scheduled.  This class may be joined at any time.

emphasis on representational drawing.  It was developed by Judy Suss and geared to age
and experience.  By mastering and understanding the basic elements of shape, children
learn to draw 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional objects.  Developmentally appropriate
exercises are designed to enhance fine motor skills and visual awareness.  It helps the
more experienced artist develop his or her drawing skills, while being a comprehensive
basic drawing course for the beginner.  Masterpieces are completed in class and students
are encouraged to exhibit their works in our ongoing art shows.  Work is done with pencils
and markers on paper.  Children develop self-esteem by learning in a non-competitive
environment.  Each lesson builds on previous class..
