FUN WITH DRY PASTELS

Learn the techniques of dry pastels to create paintings with strong color and immediate results. Almost no color mixing is required to obtain exciting results. We will use reference pictures or photos you bring from home.

ILLUSTRATION

Ages 6-10

Draw scenes from a favorite story or event using techniques of line, shading, and color mediums to create a charming piece of art that supports and propels the story you are illustrating. Your job will to be to successfully depict and “sell” that story so others will want to read it. You will learn the process of creating sketches to show to an “Art Director”, making changes to improve them, and then taking those sketches to “finish” for the approval of the “Art Director” & “Editor”. Bring a sketchbook and a 4B pencil.

WEEK II

BEGINNING OIL PAINTING

Ages 10 -17

Learn how to handle the brush and oil paints, Mixing of colors and various techniques will be shown, such as glazing, scumbling, dry-brushing, under-painting. You will learn the principals of composition as you work from a still-life. If time allows, you will progress to painting from reference photos. At least one painting project will be completed. Bring a beginner’s set of brushes and oil paints, odorless Turpenoid, flat palette or pad of palette paper, palette knives, paper towels and 2-3 canvases- 11”x14” or larger.

YOU AND ME AND PRESSED BOTANICALS

Discover the art of working with botanicals . Learn the techniques to properly pressed flowers, leaves, grasses, even vegetables! You and your child (grandchild, niece or nephew, friend) will use prepressed materials supplies by the instructor to create a work of art together. Come experience the calm, meditative effects of working with natural materials, while enjoying working with your youngster. Materials fee $10 payable to the instructor.

INTRODUCTION TO PRESSED BOTANICAL COLLAGE

Placement and proportion of the face and figure are critical. You will be using basic techniques of line and shading to achieve realistic portraits and figures in our work. Bring a sketchbook 11x14 or larger, 2B and 4B pencils and a kneaded eraser.

ACRYLIC ON CANVAS

Ages 10-17

Do you want to learn to paint with Acrylic but sounds very complicated! By understanding some basic principles you can produce some fantastic work. Learn the basics of composition, shape, value, texture and color harmony. This class is for beginner as well as for intermediate. In this class emphasis will be provided on step-by-step sequence on seeing composition, distinguishing light and shadow, play of light and color, effective application of paint to achieve the desired look. You will learn choosing right color. Use of metallic pens, other materials for different effects (option- al). You will also learn the use of palette knife.

INTRODUCTION TO STONE CARVING

This course is intended as an introduction to time-honored hand-carving techniques for sculpting stone. We will be working outside weather permitting. It is intended as an ongoing class. We will work through summer and fall until it is too cold to work outside. We will skip bad weather days and add the missed days at the end of classes. You may bring your own material.
